Our annual winter workshop day is upon us. There are a lot of great offerings this year. Join us for a day of learning, sharing and camaraderie, whether you’re a member or just want to get your feet wet. Please take a moment to read through this years offerings. Each runs 9-4, unless you finish early. Bring a brown bag lunch and drink, and be sure to check the course description for any materials and tools to bring with you. The fees are $10 members and $13 non-member. Email Sidsel with your choice. Workshops will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Of Gainesville.
Tunisian Crochet Project – Beth Mitchell
Tunisian crochet can appear similar to knitted, woven, or crocheted fabric & items from rugs to lace scarves. You will learn basic stitches, color changes, increases & decreases, & how to crochet in the round. Suggested projects include place mats, tablet covers, small bags, or Masa purse ( see Revelry). Bring 1-3 colors of worsted or sport wt. yarn & crochet & afghan hooks.
Tapestry Project – Jan Haase
Using a handful or string and yarn, and weaving them together into cloth has always been like magic to me – putting them together into an image is what TAPESTRY is all about. This workshop is for anyone, beginner or otherwise who wants to explore or experiment with this special technique. We will use warped looms to weave a 6” x 6” image (Materials for the looms from the Re-Purpose Shop near Satchels). We’ll use yarns left over from previous projects. You provide a scissors and a tapestry needle (Big eye, blunt tip) and together we will create masterpieces! I will bring some simple images that you can select from or bring an image of your choice that fits this format. We will just be able to start our projects on Saturday, but those who wish can meet at a later time to evaluate and finish them.
Inkle Weaving ~ Pick-Up Technique – Janean Easley
Inkle Weaving produces a narrow, warp faced band. Pick-Up is a warp manipulation technique that adds design elements to our weaving that aren’t possible through plain/tabby weave. This workshop will focus on the Pick-up techniques of Inkle weaving. We’ll have some discussion, learn how to read our pattern, warp our loom, and begin work on a band. We’ll look at both the “Basket Weave” and “Horizontal Bar” set up. Some basic Inkle skills are necessary as we’ll be warping in class. Participants will need to bring the following: Inkle Loom, belt type shuttle, DP knitting needle or large tapestry needle (to manipulate warps), scissors, 50 +/- heddles, at least 3 balls of yarn in Contrasting colors (non-stretchy – such as a Perle cotton or crochet cotton), patience and a sense of humor. Knitted Beaded Bracelet – Carol Turner
These knitted bracelets look like they’re covered in beads, and they’re very light and comfortable to wear. Making one is quick, simple, and most rewarding. All that’s needed is the ability to knit. Large seed beads are stung on a glitzy cord and then knitted. What’s needed for the project are size 3 knitting needles, a toggle, beads and yarn. Each person needs to bring size 3 knitting needles, and if they have any large seed beads they want to use they can bring them too.
